Here they are, the flowers we all know and love. The State Flower of Texas! Turning your yard into an Onderdonk painting begins here. The beautiful Texas Bluebonnet is an annual that should be planted in fall to present blooms the following spring. This flower requires space, full sun, and well-draining soil. Different varieties of bluebonnets grow throughout the entire state, even deep West Texas, but this is the most common and widespread variety. It can do well in most soils, but is dependent upon a soil bacterium called rhizobium. It is likely you will find success in most soils, but just in case, you may want to plant in a couple different soil types to see what works best. Bluebonnets are not only breathtakingly beautiful, they actually improve the soil in which they grow. The aforementioned bacterium, rhizobium, has a symbiotic relationship with the plant. It grows on the roots and generates clean nitrogen, pumping it into the soil as fertilizer for future plants. The blue blooms of course also serve as vital pollinators for bees, and the seeds are a source of food for birds. Bluebonnets can also do well in areas outside their native range. However, if in an area that has a hard winter, bluebonnets will need to be planted in spring as the young plants may not survive freezes. Prior to spring planting, the seeds must be scarified and cold stratified to mimic the natural temperature fluctuations and wear and tear of winter on the very hard outer seed coatings.10% OF EVERY SALE IS DONATED TO TEXAS PARKS WILDLIFE. This will help keep current parks open, protect our wildlife, and conserve new areas. Thank you for helping support Texas nature! Native plants have a myriad of benefits, and I try to promote their propagation and use wherever possible, especially with landscaping. Primarily, they provide food and shelter for native species of wildlife which are largely losing habitat. Also, they support native pollinators like bees and butterflies. They usually grow better and require less care like water or fertilizer as they're more suited to the environment they're native to. I hope you make the choice to fill your yard with Texas natives and protect our wildlife.
